In the background of this painting is a text of the hymn “Ah, Holy Jesus” which is especially precious to me as I sang it with the Biola Chorale in 1989. The Chorale was and continues to be family to me and I especially love and appreciate our conductor who continues to be my mentor and good friend, Loren Wiebe. This piece is about prayer, of course. Specifically, the sacrificial prayers that have been prayed over me, the knowing and the listening. I was inspired by Mary Oliver‘s poem “The World I Live In”: I have refused to live locked in the orderly house of reasons and proofs. The world I live in and believe in is wider than that. And anyway, what’s wrong with maybe? You wouldn’t believe what once or twice I have seen. I’ll just tell you this: only if there are angels in your head will you ever, possibly, see one.
